Architect Koolhaas curated for the first time with space dialogue Sol Levitt

August 05, 2024

Rem Koolhaas, the most topical figure in contemporary architecture, first challenged the curator's identity and curated a solo exhibition for his respected master Sol LeWitt: "Sol LeWitt: Between the Lines ".

The exhibition was curated in collaboration with the Italian curator Francesco Stocchi and exhibited at the Fondazione Carriero in Milan, Italy. The exhibition works across the various stages of Sol Levitt's artistic career, trying to explore the relationship between Levitt's work and architecture.

Rem Koolhaas is known to the Chinese public as the new CCTV building. He was one of the most prized awards in the construction industry, the Pulitzer Prize, and is one of the leading figures in contemporary architecture. The background of his architect's identity also brings a new perspective to the curatorial process, allowing the exhibition to break away from the traditional barriers of art history and architectural history, and to re-examine Levitt's many ideas and influences for the world.

“It’s probably what we should do to launch a tripartite dialogue (art, architecture, curator),” said joint curator Stoich. “In this context, it allows us to think about art. It can also be an adhesive for buildings simply as a response to the architectural space."

In the 1960s, Levitt put forward the famous viewpoint that "ideal is the machine for producing art", and promoted the minimalism's thinking on artistic expression to a more metaphysical level, which produced huge achievements for the peers and later generations of artists. influences. In order to restore the essence of art, he uses the most basic geometric elements as the standard components of his conceptual art creation to establish the "grammar system" of creation. Since then, he has further subverted the traditional concept of artistic creation with a series of wall paintings based on the artist's preset program, which was drawn by assistants and even volunteers, and completely liberated the artist's thinking from the shackles of artistic skills.

“An artist’s work can continue to develop after his death. Of course this does not really happen in the work, but in our view of the work,” Koolhaas said. “So for me, I am really trying to create a life for Sol Levitt, to look at all his works with a new look, and to create new life for the work."

The exhibition will feature 15 Levitt iconic sequence sculptures, 7 wall painting masterpieces, and his photographic collection "Autobiography 1980", which will attempt to fully demonstrate the creative and thinking process of this conceptual art pioneer. The exhibition will continue to be exhibited until June 23, 2018.
